Have you ever seen someone ‘escorted’ to the front door of the store before? Were they in hand cuffs? You know, not all folks escorted to the front door are criminals, as I discovered tonight.
I was escorted to the front of the store tonight. I have not ever had that happen to me before, but the item I purchased tonight required this escort. I bought my very first handgun. It is a .44 magnum made by Smith & Wesson, nicknamed “The Backpacker”.
Handguns can be a touchy subject for so many people. And I get that. I have small children in the house and what mother HASN’T had those nightmares, right?? Can I take a moment to explain to you why I purchased this gun?
Do you see those 5 adorable kids standing there? THAT is why I bought this handgun tonight. Alaska is the outdoor living state, and we love being outdoors. The hiking here is just amazing, and the trails at Eagle River Nature Center are delightful!!! We stepped out of the van and were immediately greeted with a sign explaining that a large portion of the trail was closed. Wash out, weather…. nope, BEAR. A brown bear took down a moose right on the trail. As bears do, this brown has and will continue to return to his moose meal several times over the following weeks. We are only 1 week past the incident, therefore the trail is closed and will remain closed until the ‘leftovers’ have been consumed. Also, we ran into another Chaplain family hiking the same trails, and standing next to the same hollowed out tree that our kids played in, had been a bull moose… not 10 yards from the trail.
These are dangerous animals and I have children that I will protect to the last breath of my body. Because I want to protect them while we enjoy the great state of Alaska and all it has to offer, I will arm myself. I won’t be picking any fights, but if a ‘fight’ comes to me or attempts to harm any of my children…. this mama bear’s packing heat and she ain’t afraid to pull the trigger.
Daddy didn’t want to be left out, and the truth is that 2 guns are always better than one….
so he bought a scabbard to carry his 12 gauge. Now I pray that we never, NEVER, have to use them!!!
